Former Olympic medalist and two-time world champion figure skater Shoma Uno announced on his Instagram account on May 9 that he was retiring from the sport.
“I started skating when I was 5 years old, and I am very grateful that I have been able to continue for 21 years and have had a wonderful career in the sport,” Uno, 26, said in the post.
He will hold a news conference on May 14.
Uno was born and raised in Nagoya. He won a silver medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
He won the World Figure Skating Championships in 2022 and 2023, becoming the first Japanese male to win back-to-back titles.
He captured the Japan Figure Skating Championships six times in his career.
